About me

Andrew Ling

I am a specialist HPB (liver, pancreas and gallbladder) and General Surgeon. I offer treatment of both malignant (cancer) and benign (non-cancer) conditions. I perform laparoscopic (keyhole) procedures where appropriate and also perform gastroscopy and colonoscopy as well as ERCP (specialist endoscopy of the bile duct). I also offer surgery for all types of abdominal wall hernias.

Qualifications

I completed my undergraduate studies at The University of Sydney graduating with first class honours in Biochemistry in 2002. I received my primary medical degree from The University of Sydney graduating in 2006. I then completed my general surgical training through the Western Sydney Surgical Training Network, undertaking training across western Sydney and western NSW, including training at both Nepean Hospital and Westmead Hospital and was awarded my Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2013.

Clinical Interests

I provide care for patients requiring emergency surgery through the Acute Surgical Unit at Nepean Hospital, and offer elective procedures at Nepean Public and Private Hospitals, as well as Blue Mountains ANZAC Hospital in Katoomba. I offer:

  • Laparoscopic (keyhole) Gallbladder Surgery
  • Hernia Surgery
  • Liver Surgery
  • Pancreas Surgery
  • Complex Bile Duct Surgery

Most hernia and gallbladder surgery can be performed as day surgery, and I am happy to discuss this during our consultation.

Post Fellowship Training

After finishing surgical training, I undertook post-fellowship training with the Australian and New Zealand Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (ANZHPBA) for three years at Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick and at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds, UK, where I trained in complex liver, pancreas and transplant surgery.

I have also completed an Associate Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators being awarded this in 2022.

Medical Education and Training

I have a keen interest in educating the next generation of doctors and surgeons.
I have worked as Director of Prevocational Education and Training, as well as Director of Unaccredited Surgical Training at Nepean Hospital each for 4 years. I have also served on both the Prevocational Training Council and the Prevocational Accreditation Committee with the Health Education and Training Institute.

I am a course director for the Management of Surgical Emergencies Course with General Surgeons Australia, and a faculty member for the Training in Professional Skills course run by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

I am currently appointed as a Clinical Lecturer in Surgery with The University of Sydney.

Advocacy and Governance

I am actively involved in the Medical Staff Councils at both Nepean and Blue Mountains ANZAC Memorial Hospital, where I serve as Deputy Chair. Through these activities we aim to advocate for improvements to each hospital and our ability to provide excellent clinical care.

I am a member of the Cancer Institute of NSW: Pancreas and Liver Cancer Clinical Advisory Group, as well as the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre: Biliary Tract Cancer Expert working group both of which aim to improve guidelines and outcomes for patients with liver and pancreas cancers.
